A common question a homeowner has is: “How long does my heating and cooling equipment last?”
Generally speaking, a forced-air furnace or an A/C unit can last between 12-24 years. “Entry-level” products tend to have a shorter life span than premium products; like the old saying: “You get what you pay for.”
Annual maintenance also plays an important factor in the longevity of the appliance. If you buy the best new furnace or A/C in the world, but you don’t take care of it, that will shorten the life of the equipment. The same holds true for A/C units.
Boilers will typically outlast a furnace; average life being 15-25 years.
There is also the efficiency factor. With utility costs always going up, sometimes it makes sense to upgrade for that reason alone. While annual maintenance does wonders to improve efficiency in older equipment, the efficiency will still decrease with age. Without annual maintenance, efficiency decreases at a rapid rate.
